The Author Ellen Davis-Mesman was born in Amsterdam, Holland. She received private tuition whilst working as assistant to the cultural officer of the Municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel. She died, prematurely, in the Cape,South Africa, in February 2005. She was art critic for Die Burger from 1966 to 1983, served on judging panels and has written many articles on art. She was one of the art advisers for the Sanlam Art Collection. She was married to sculptor Bill Davis, who still lives and works in Vermont, Cape, South Africa.
