A stylish colourist, who has
lived and worked in Austria, the Netherlands and South Africa. His best
works, spanning different genres, are amongst the landscapes, portraits and still
lifes. His works have been exhibited world-wide, also at various Biennales, have been
acquired by many museums, galleries and private collections.
Alfred Krenz was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1899. Krenz studied art in Vienna and Paris. The family left Austria at the outbreak of the Second World War and settled in Holland. After the war they moved to South Africa where Krenz lived and worked till his death in 1980. He had an art school in Rondebosch, Cape. In 1959 Krenz received an honorary professorship from the Austrian Government. In 1967 he was awarded the Medal of Honour for Painting by the S.A. Academy and in 1975 the Pretoria Art Museum honoured Krenz with a retrospective exhibition. There exist numerous articles, press reviews and other publications on this versatile artist. A recent illustrated biography, written and published by art critic Ellen Davis-Mesman, entitled "The Colourful Palette of Alfred Krenz", has been well received and is available for sale to the public. |
